Sound bowl meditation incorporates the use of sound bowls to provide a focus for deeper meditation. The various meditation practices around the world have always had a relationship with sound in the form of mantras and chanting. Sound created vocally or via the use of instruments has been shown to be an effective therapy in healing and calming the mind.
What are singing sound bowls?
Singing sound bowls or sound baths enable the user to become completely immersed in the sounds created by the bowl. The sounds provide relaxation and overwhelm the constant chatter of the mind. Sound bowl meditation has been shown to reduce anxiety, stress, and depression as it gently focuses the user on the sound, relegating all other stimuli to the background.
They are traditionally made from metal with the Tibetan singing bowl being the most popular. A starter sound bowl may be made from brass with a wooden mallet for striking and is great for beginners and children. This type of bowl would have a high and bright tone to its ring. A sound bowl made of seven-metal alloy and hammered rather than machined produces a rich, layered tone using either a padded mallet or round striker. This type of sound bowl is more traditional and an instrument of true beauty.
This sound bowl meditation facilitates mindfulness, allowing children to learn how to focus on one thing. Life is full of distractions that make it difficult to be in the moment and simply listen.
