Description
Preschool meditation can be used in so many wonderful ways to help young children learn about their emotions, thoughts and how to relax their little bodies. Meditation activities for preschoolers are obviously very different from older children and adults, but introducing the practice of meditation to preschoolers is so valuable.
They are growing up in a world that is very busy. They will often be busy themselves at preschool or kinder or even child care. The free, unstructured play we were able to enjoy as children, does not happen as frequently. In its place, children may be scheduled with activities in the afternoon as well as being exposed to technology that distracts them from being bored or climbing a tree!
So how do you actually get a preschooler to sit still and meditate? You don’t!! For most little ones, it is really difficult to sit still, not fidget, talk or roll around! Probably the most important thing to remember is that kids will often mimic what their parents do, so incorporating meditation into your daily routine will greatly increase the chance your preschooler will follow! There are a number of meditation activities for preschoolers that you could incorporate into your teaching, here are a couple of pointers that might help when beginning to teach preschool meditation:
- Have them sit in a comfy position – this can be lying on their back or sitting cross-legged
- Teach them about connecting with their bodies – have them lie on their back and watch their little bellies move up and down as they take deep breaths in and out. Using visuals is generally helpful such as:
- getting them to picture a big balloon they want to blow up
- asking them to take a big, slow deep breath
- then get them to breathe out slowly so the balloon doesn’t pop!
Another very helpful technique for preschool meditation is the use of a singing bowl or other piece of music that enables your child to focus on while deep breathing.
There are many lovely meditation activities for preschoolers providing affirmations and relaxation. If your little one enjoys this meditation, there are many more in our shop for this age group.
Enjoy!
Julianne –
We’ve been using your free floating meditation for months now – I didn’t buy it because I thought it would be a passing phase for my kids (3 & 5 years) but it has actually turned our evenings around completely. My 3yo is pretty challenging and evenings were the worst but your meditation really helps calm him. It’s no exaggeration to say it saved my sanity. You’ll often hear me saying things like “tidy the playroom/brush your teeth before meditation”, or “Will, please stop screaming/throwing/destroying/ tormenting or we won’t have time for meditation” It also helps me breath at the end of a busy day and have quiet loving connection with the kids instead of the chaos, frustration and yelling that used to happen before. So, yeah… thanks!!!!
